Job Description:

Brooklyn Brewery is seeking to hire an experienced Quality Manager to join the Production Team in it's Williamsburg headquarters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Organize and analyze all data
  • Prioritize and delegate responsibilities among department technicians daily
  • Develop and improve existing quality standards and targets
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies; order as necessary
  • Maintain quality budget
  • Perform instrument operation and maintenance on the following equipment
    • Gas chromatograph
    • Beer alcolyzer
    • pH Meter
    • Spectrophotometer
    • Haze Meter
    • Acidity Meter
  • Must observe and practice all brewery safety procedures which includes wearing the proper PPE at all times
  • Must be able to work in and promote a team oriented and “safety first” environment
  • Work safely and efficiently to attain department and brewery goals
  • Determine if a product can be released or needs to go on a quality hold based on chemical, microbiological and sensory results
  • Analyze daily quality data and report out to production team
    • Highlight products that are on hold and include recommended next steps
      • Create detailed reports of products that are put on hold detailing what happened, what the resolution was and recommend process changes to avoid the same issue from occurring again
  • Evaluate incoming raw materials and determine if they are suitable for production
  • Assist in development of sensory panel at Brooklyn; work towards an end goal of having a descriptive panel             
    • Daily panel; help train daily panel members on profiles of Brooklyn beers
    • R&D panel; help train panel on different types of sensory analysis to evaluate R&D products (napping, descriptive panel, etc.)
    • Shelf life testing; develop retain library and test products on panel to help determine shelf life
  • Ensure effective communication throughout department and interdepartmentally to provide adequate and timely flow of information
  • Ensure all laboratory testing has an updated SOP, if any procedures do not have a documented SOP develop one
  • Generate ideas for continuous improvement, make recommendations for improved processes
  • Help develop a HAACP/food safety team
    • Goal to conduct and document daily and monthly audits in regard to GMP and HACCP plan
    • Help develop and enforce all brewery and food safety standards
  • Ensure all quality standards are being met; including but not limited to…
    • Package release/cellar analysis
    • Fermentation analysis/VDK
    • Raw material
  • Oversee sensory at the Brooklyn facility as well as our contract and partner breweries
  • Develop a product retain library
    • Collect, document and store the proper amount of product from each tank to ensure compliance with the TTB needs as well as the brewery procedures
  • Manage and respond to customer complaints

Job Requirements:

  • Four year degree required; must have advanced knowledge of chemistry, biology or related subject
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in related field; brewing quality experience preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GMP
  • Knowledge of basic statistical process control
  • Proven analytical, problem solving and project management skills
  • Proven mechanical aptitude, demonstrated by work, avocation and vocation
  • Must be proficient with computers and automated equipment to input and evaluate data
  • Proficient in Microsoft word and excel
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory and production safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to work in a self directed work force
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and team building skills
  • Ability to work with all levels of management in multi-functional departments
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal direction
  • Ability to be flexible and shift priorities in a constantly changing, fast paced work environment
  • Self-starter, proactive
  • Highly effective multitasker; resourceful with a “get-it-done” attitude
  • Able to effect positive change with a flexible, open-minded, positive approach
